Continental Door Installs Cornell Security Grilles for the Southport Development Project in Renton
We recently had the opportunity to bring our experience and technical expertise to the Southport Development Project in Renton by performing the installation of a Cornell security grille.
The Southport campus is a billion-dollar mixed-use development of more than 17 acres. The project is made up of multi-family luxury housing, restaurants, storefronts, office space and a hotel. It is strategically situated within minutes of the largest tech employers in the Greater Seattle area — located at the south end of the lake in Renton, within 15 miles of both Seattle and Bellevue. The project has been in development for more than three years and is expected to eventually serve more than 9,000 hotel guests, workers and apartment residents.
Renton city officials have called the development a “game-changer.” Contractors working on this project needed the level of attention to detail and reliability demanded by a billion-dollar project that is one of the largest the city of Renton has ever seen.
The Purpose of the Cornell Security Grilles
The Cornell grilles we installed will act as roll-down security gates at the valet entrance and exit of a Southport parking garage. When the parking garage is closed, the grilles will help prevent unauthorized or forced access to the parking garage.
The grilles are designed to separate two spaces with a highly secure and retractable barrier, without reducing visibility and airflow. The same brand and style of grilles are also frequently used with plate glass storefronts to deter smash-and-grab crimes while keeping the displays visible, as well as to provide extra security to areas like pharmacies.
The specific model of Cornell grilles we selected for the project is often used to provide extra security to parking garages. It also provides high opening speed, a high number of maintenance-free cycles and a high level of design flexibility.

Challenges of the Cornell Security Grille Installation
The Southport Development Project is the culmination of three years of effort and investment. The scale of the project required a massive development site — almost 2.4 million square feet when the hotels, apartments and office floor space is accounted for. The sheer size of the development site meant that the project was a massive undertaking for all contractors and construction crews involved.
